This Be Me
Friday, January 19th, 2007

I recently received the following email from Germany’s version (a copy, yes) of LinkedIn concerning the photo I had for my profile (which is above):
Dear Mr Abbett,
I would like to bring to your attention for the second time the following from the Terms and Conditions you agreed to when you signed up to XING:4.1.2 To post on the XING Web sites only photographs of the User which are not more than five (5) years old and in which the User can be clearly and plainly recognized. The User warrants and represents that the public display of the photographs delivered by the User to the XING Web sites is not prohibited. The User shall not upload any photographs or images of any other person than of the User, or of non-existent persons or other beings (such as animals, imaginary creatures, etc.). The photographs delivered by the User shall not contain any company logos. The exception in this case is photos of XING employees.
Group logos that contain company logos are also not permitted. Premium Groups are exempt from this rule, however. It is for this reason that we have removed your picture and ask that in the future you comply with this when uploading a new picture. If you choose to not abide by these rules we will remove your profile next time.

I replied to both the email address that the email originated from as well as cc’ing the founder, Lar Hinrichs. It’s been 9 days since I emailed them and I still haven’t heard anything. So much for the OpenBC customer service. More to come…
sidenote : Germany is a country that is very serious about portraits. For example, when you apply to a job you have to include a photographed portrait along with your CV. Looks can be deceiving and damning.

Old vs New
Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Is the above photo from the New York Times the future of advertising? Ads everywhere you look? Old school advertiser Linda Kaplan Thaler, chief executive at the Kaplan Thaler Group, thinks so as quoted in this New York Times article:
“We never know where the consumer is going to be at any point in time, so we have to find a way to be everywhere. Ubiquity is the new exclusivity.”
I would strongly argue against a future like the above. If companies do enough research they will have a better understanding of people’s behavior, and therefore, be better able to target their communication. This quote from the Hypergene site sums it up rather nicely.
“On the web you don’t control your message, but you’re welcome participate in the conversation you’ve started.”
This could be applied to any marketing message. That being said, it’s technology and more importantly, people’s embrace of technology, that will make it that much easier to reach people it they so choose. Opt in being the keyword here. It’s going to take traditional advertisers a while before they understand this but they are starting to make steps in the right direction.
